- Portrait of George Washington, his wife, Mary Custis Washington,two grandchildren, and a black [slave] servant. Details include a globe, map of the District of Columbia, sword, cocked hat, and view of the Potomac River [?]. The image title is also given in French: "La Famille de Washington. George Washington Son Epouse et les deux petits Enfants du Nom de Custis."
Washington and his wife raised their two grandchildren, Eleanor Parke Custis and George Washington Parke Custis. The black servant is thought to be William Lee (also known as Billy or Will Lee), Washington's trusted personal servant. The original painting from which this engraving was made is in the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C. - Part of
