Ercilla y Zúñiga, as a Spanish soldier, fought against the Araucanians in Chile and while there began the epic poem, La Araucana, considered the finest Spanish historical poem. The poem tells of the courageous insurrection of the Araucanians, as well as relating the history of Chile and contemporary Spain. - Part of
