One of a series of engravings showing Franklin wearing a fur hat and spectacles which were distributed in Europe during the time he negotiated the American colonists' freedom. These popular engravings reinforced the perception of Franklin as an enlightened, but homespun and virtuous, sage and contributed to his enormous popularity in France.
